The city is located west of Batak Rodopi (central-southern part of Bulgaria). It is part of Pazardjik region. Batak is located 156 km southeast of Sofia. It is situated at an altitude of 700-999 m above sea level, covers an area of 461,105 km ² and has
a population of 3071 inhabitants.
There are numerous archaeological monuments in the Batak region. A Stone Age discovery took place in 1958. Tools, ceramics, ornaments and rhinoceros bones were discovered, proving that in Quaternary climate that was hot.
Twenty Thracian fortresses, Thracian, Roman, Byzantine and Slavic churches and monasteries, and Roman bridges, mines, mills and other archaeological sites were discovered in this region.
