It is Bulgaria's most sacred city, a city with a very interesting past. Asenovgrad is a city located in central-southern part of Bulgaria. It is located in Plovdiv region, near the town of Plovdiv.
The city was founded by the Thracians and then successively belonged to the Romans, Byzantines, Bulgarian Kingdom and the Ottoman Empire, before finally getting in the Bulgarian state. In 1364 the city was conquered by Tsar Ivan Alexander, after which it was
regained by the Turks.
It is situated along both banks of the River Assenitsa (Chepelarska, Chaya).
