About Gabrovo - presentation, information, photos and recommendations
Gabrovo is situated 390 m above sea level along the two banks of Yantra River, at the foot of the Shipka (Central Stara Planina). It is located 220 km northeast of Sofia, 274 km south-west of Varna, 150 km north-east of Plovdiv and 46 km south-west of Veliko Tarnovo. Gabrovo is near the geographical center of Bulgaria's ski resort Uzana.
The relief of the region is diverse, being mostly mountainous. Gabrovo Region covers some parts of the Balkan Mountains, valleys Yantra Rositza, Vidima, Drianovska River, and several dishes and heights of Gabrovo and Sevlievo. Russian-Podkova railway passes through the Balkan Mountains region and connects the North of Bulgaria with Southern Bulgaria.
Gabrovo region has been inhabited since ancient times, the oldest dating from the Paleolithic artifacts, Bacho Kiro caves were discovered here. Medieval fortresses guarding the Balkan passes (near the villages and Gradnitza Batoshevo located near Gabrovo).
There are more than 650 monuments of culture, most of which are linked to the National Renaissance. Crafts prospered in the region during the National Renaissance, here taking birth Tryavna Art School. Masters to builders, sculptors and painters have become famous for their talent, skills and their fame, traveling far beyond the Ottoman Empire. Painters and sculptors from Tryavna have left wonderful works of art.
Dryanovo is the birthplace of the largest manufacturer Bulgarian National Renaissance, the architect Nikolai Fichev, called Kolyu Ficheto. In Gabrovo region has its origins Aprilov school's founding.
