About Melnik - presentation, information, photos and recommendations
Melnik is a town in Blagoevgrad Province in southwestern Bulgaria, Pirin Mountains in the southwest, about 440 m above sea level. The city is an architectural reserve and 96 buildings are cultural monuments. With a population of 385, is the smallest town in Bulgaria, retaining its city status today for historical reasons.
The unique architecture of Melnik and Rozhen monastery nearby (located 6 km southeast of Melnik), makes it a popular tourist destination. The city is also associated with the impressive natural sand pyramids in different forms, resembling giant mushrooms, ancient towers and obelisks, spread over an area of 17 km ² in Melnik, Kurlanovo and Rozhen. The city was also famous for producing a strong wine from at least 1346. Lately Melnik area enjoys a revival of viticulture and winemaking. Several wineries new, modern, were built and operated (Villa Melnik Winery, Winery Sintika, Orbelus, etc.), producing quality wine from local and international varieties.
Interesting architectural landmarks include the Byzantine House, one of the oldest civil building in the Balkans (probably built in the 12th century or the 13th century as a fortress Bulgarian) Kordopulou House (named after the merchant Manolis Kordopulou whom belonged time), which is also one of the largest wine cellars in Melnik, Pashov House (1815), which houses the Historical Museum of Melnik and Pasha House, built by Ibrahim Bey, one of the wealthiest drink in the region, during the Ottoman rule. Some of the old churches in the city that are worth visiting are Saint Nicholas (built in the 13th century), SS Peter and Paul (1840), St. Nicholas thaumaturge (1756) and St Anthony.
