Smolian Region is situated in southern Bulgaria, in the most picturesque Rhodope Mountains. It lies at an altitude of 850 - 1050 m above sea level. It is located south-east of Sofia at a distance of 250 km, 103 km south of Plovdiv and only mountain resort 16 km south of Plovdiv. It is bordered by the regions of Plovdiv, Pazardzhik, Kardzhali and Blagoevgrad, and at the southern borders with Greece.
Smolian is one of the most beautiful cities in Bulgaria. The landscape is mountainous region. It covers the eastern Rhodope Mountains with venerable coniferous forests and grasslands. The main road passing through the area is the road Plovdiv-Smolian. Livestock in the region is developed. Near Madan there are deposits of lead and zinc ores.
Rhodope Mountains Nature is perfect for winter and summer tourism, rural tourism, hunting and ecotourism. Most populated areas are tourist centers. In villages Momchilovtsi, Smilian, Gela, etc.. you can taste traditional foods, see and hear famous songs and dances of the Rhodope.
Some are natural parts of biosphere reserves in Kazan, Soskovche, Dol and Amzovo Momchil, stone vaults of the beautiful bridge (Chudnite Mostov), keys and Trigrad Buinov, Devil's Throat (Diavolskoto Garlo), caves and Yagodina Uhlovitsa.
There are plenty of rivers that cross the area, most of them Arda, Vacha, Chepelare, Varbitza, Cherni (Black), Reka and Devin. Abundant mineral water springs near the town and village Devin Money, Beden, Mihalkovo, Lyaskovo. Proving and Vacha dams offer excellent conditions for fishing.
