Veliko Tarnovo is situated at 210 m above sea level along the historical hills of Sveta Gora, and Trapezitsa Tsarevets. Today, Veliko Turnovo is an important administrative, cultural, historical and tourist center of Bulgaria.
The city is the center of one of the 28 administrative districts of the country. Veliko Turnovo District has an area of 4662 km ² and includes 10 municipalities with 14 towns and 322 villages. The population is about 295,000 inhabitants.
Veliko Tarnovo is the town with the most glorious historical past in Bulgaria.
Vestiges of Tsarevets Hill are dated before the Bronze Age (XIII century BC.). The first settlements here were inhabited by Thracians. The place has seen a great blossoming between VI centuries BC. - I AD.
The name is related to the Slavic word "dull" or "tower" (throne), and over the years turned into Ternov, Turnov, Tur-November, Turnovgrad, Turnovo, and later in Veliko Turnovo, being called "Veliko "(sea) due to its size and beauty.
There are 140 cultural monuments of national importance in the region of Veliko Tarnovo. Area's cultural history dates back to prehistory. Numerous cultural monuments, rich and diverse fauna and thermal waters near the village Voneshta Voda ("stinking waters"), creates the condition for cultural and hunting tourism along with medical and spa tourism. Complexes Lyaskovetz vine, Suhindol, and Svishtov stimulate Karaysen wine tourism. Municipalities Elena Zlataritza, and Pavlikenisunt Strazhitza specialize in rural tourism.
Veliko Turnovo city population is approximately 65 000 permanent, but with students from the University of St. Cyril and Methodius (the second largest in the country) and the Military University "Vasil Levski", the larger, approximately 12 000 inhabitants.
Good location, climate, natural resources, well-preserved historical relics, art preservation and continuation of traditional crafts, the area offers a good development in future. Veliko Turnovo is an important "symbol" of Bulgaria, and statistics indicate the city and region are in the top 10 most visited tourist destinations in Eastern Europe.
