Yambol Region is situated in the south-eastern Bulgaria. It is bordered by the regions of Sliven, Burgas, Stara Zagora and Haskovo, and south of the border with Turkey. The landscape is predominantly plain and hill. Plain region comprises Yambol, Elhovo Plain, the hill Bakadzhik, parts of Mountain Sakara, Svetliyskite, Derventskite and Manastirskite heights. Tundzha is the largest river in the region. The dam is built on the river Malko Sharkovo Popovska.
Yambol is a town in southeastern Bulgaria, the administrative center of Yambol Province. It lies on both banks of the river Tundzha in the historical region of Thrace. Yambol District population is 156,070 inhabitants and covers an area of 3355 km square. Occasionally, it is called "Jambol.
Administrative centers of the two municipalities are located in Yambol. One is in the rural area of the city and the other is the city Tundzha Yambol.
The area has been inhabited since the Neolithic and the ancient Thracian city of Kabyle was founded by Philip II of Macedon. It was the Romans conquered and destroyed by Avars in 583. Yambol was founded by the Roman emperor Diocletian in 293. Although it was called Diospolis (the "City of Zeus" in Greek), it also reflected the name of the king. The name later evolved through Diampolis, Hiambouli (in Byzantine chronicles), Dinibouli (in Arabic chronicles), Dbilin (inscriptions in Bulgarian), and Diamboli, eventually becoming Yambol.
When Slavs and Bulgarians reached the Balkans in the Middle Ages, the city has been challenged by the Bulgarian Empire and Eastern Roman Empire.
Eastern Orthodox religion is predominant, being present everywhere churches (Holy Trinity, St. George and the highest is St. Nicholas, built in 1888).
