It is Bulgaria's most sacred city, a city with a very interesting past. Asenovgrad is a city located in central-southern part of Bulgaria. It is located in Plovdiv region, near the town of Plovdiv.
The city was founded by the Thracians and then successively belonged to the Romans, Byzantines, Bulgarian Kingdom and the Ottoman Empire, before finally getting in the Bulgarian state. In 1364 the city was conquered by Tsar Ivan Alexander, after which it was regained by the Turks.
It is situated along both banks of the River Assenitsa (Chepelarska, Chaya). It covers a small part of the Thracian plain to the north, and includes areas in the Rhodope Mountains to the south. The city is bordered by the villages 615 km patrati.Se Rodopi, Laki, Banita Parvomay and Sadova.
Assenovgrad - is the largest town in the Rhodope and the second largest district of Plovdiv. It is situated at the foot of the mountain at an altitude above sea level approximately 220 m and is 19 km from Plovdiv, 85 km from the city Smolian and about 180 km from Sofia.
In the city and its surroundings are no more than 5 monasteries, 12 churches and more than 50 chapels.
