Petrich is situated in the south-western Bulgaria, 13 km from the border customs point Kulata Greek and Zlatarevo 20 km distance in the line of the border with Macedonia. Belasitsa is located at the foot and is 189 km away from Sofia.
Petrich is situated near the borders with Greece and Macedonia. Transition in Macedonia is known as Novo Selo-Petrich, the first border town of Novo Selo.
Petrich is at an altitude 100-199 m above sea level, covers an area of 80.421km ² and has a population of 29,785 inhabitants
(01.01.2007 census). Strumeshnitsa reach rivers Struma and slope of mountains Osogovo-Belasitsa group.
In this part of the two rivers valleys grow long and narrow draws. In the south slope to Belasitsa increases above sea level to 500 m. In this area are found a lot of Mediterranean animals, some of which are endangered.
Here is a resort that uses mineral water from springs roupa. Sanatorium complex for mud medical treatment is within the village Marikostinovo. Near the ancient city of Petrich is Istra.
Petrich was included in Bulgarian territory during the reign of Knyaz Boris I (852-889). During the Middle Ages was an important fortress during the wars, the Bulgarian Tsar Samuil (997-1014) to Byzantium. During Ottoman rule, was originally part of the vilayet Serez Sanjak Rumelia.
The city is an agricultural center for fruits, vegetables and tobacco. It has two factories, one that makes detectors to increase the water level and another that makes components for cranes.
